Climate Change

Where Do We Go From Here?
In a presentation given to a DCMS seminar on sustainability, Dr Chris Rapley, Director The Science Museum re-iterated the need for urgent action and the role of the creative industries in addressing the challenge of climate change. Download Dr Rapley's presentation, and the seminar report here.
As an organisation we have made a commitment to addressing climate change working with members and in our own day to day practices. This is about hearts and minds - how the arts can influence behaviours and engender radical (as that is what is needed) thinking. It is also about the nuts and bolts of reducing carbon emmissions - developing and sharing good practice and campaigning for requisite policy changes.
- We have considered an 'art miles' challenge
- Should every gallery have an artist 'eco' champion?
- What role might local (joint) procurement and greater sharing of resources play?
- What does green IT look like as the norm rather than a tentative experiment?
- We know that many of our buildings, including the first round of lottery buildings do not meet the latest environmental standards - what government support is needed to address this? Do you have solutions to share?
The RSA has taken a lead, working with artists to affect policy and provoke change through its
Arts & Ecology Centre and
Culture|Futures is an international collaboration between organisations and individuals concerned with shaping a cultural agenda to support the transition towards an Ecological Age.
