London Underground (LU) has been a pioneer in commissioning and presenting art and design since 1908 and Art on the Underground both reflects and builds on this tradition, creating a new legacy of contemporary art for the 20th Century.
A century ago - Managing Director Frank Pick began commissioning leading artists such as Man Ray, Edward McKnight Kauffer and Graham Sutherland to work on innovative poster campaigns. Today iconic designs such as Harry Beck’s groundbreaking Tube map and the distinctive blue and red station signs are recognised the world over.
Since 2000, Art on the Underground has been working with artists to produce and present new artworks to enhance and enrich the journeys of millions on the Tube every day.
In order to achieve our vision of producing world class art for a world class Tube, Art on the Underground delivers a high calibre contemporary art programme that directly engages with and responds to the unique audience and environment of LU.
We work with artists that reflect the diversity and international importance of London, from those emerging at the start of promising careers to established and internationally significant artists with a reputation for producing ground-breaking and influential works of art.
We employ a broad and flexible range of project models in many locations across the Tube network for example the large-scale ‘station-sized’ commissions that appear in sites such as Gloucester Road station for a year at a time and by contrast the well-loved pocket Tube map cover artworks, each only 7.5cm wide but reaching 15 million customers a year.
The LU heritage and unique environment are subjects of long-term fascination for artists, staff and customers. We commission new works that link this heritage to the present day connecting the organisation’s exceptional history with an impressive future.
This site provides information and images of our current and forthcoming projects as well as a comprehensive archive of projects produced over the past few years.

Marianne Eigenheer is Director of the Institute for Curatorship and Education. My research interests are the visual arts in relation to other disciplines. Recently this includes exciting opportunities between different aspects of art, science and society and the problems of culture in different societies. I studied music for years, have exhibited until now on an international basis, and have written on art. For many years I worked at the Museum in Lucerne and as a freelance curator. For ten years until autumn 2006 I also was Professor for Fine Arts at the Art Academy in Stuttgart.

Liverpool Biennial is among the most successful art commissioning agencies in the UK, best known for presenting the UK’s largest festival of contemporary visual art. Established in 1998 last year saw the 5th festival take place between 20th September and 30th November - click here to visit the festival section of the website. Since its inception the International exhibition has commissioned well over 100 new works, many for the streets and public spaces of Liverpool, by established contemporary artists from around the world. Liverpool Biennial also has a year-round role commissioning art for the public realm. Past projects include Antony Gormley’s stunning work Another Place which has found a permanent home at Crosby beach - and the highly acclaimed Turning the Pace Over by Richard Wilson which literally turns a building inside-out.
The mission through all our activities is engaging art, people and place. We do this by commissioning artworks and other programmes collaboratively, in partnership with a myriad of organisations and individuals from the city’s established art institutions to community groups in local neighbourhoods. These activities find support from a range of local authorities, private trusts and regeneration agencies in the city region and beyond.
We also work towards ambitious educational objectives through a programme of activities developed within the context of the work we commission. We play a key role in the ongoing development of Liverpool as a place for artists to learn, live and work, and engage in discourse-based activity with peers locally, nationally and internationally.

Milton Keynes Gallery opened in October 1999 as the city's purpose-built venue for the presentation of international contemporary art exhibitions. More recently it has developed an offsite programme, which has included such projects as the temporary 19m high MK Forty Tower designed by dRMM architects. Onsite exhibitions have included emerging, mid-career and established artists in solo and group shows, ranging from the inaugural exhibition by Gilbert & George to Michael Craig-Martin, and more recently Phil Collins and Cathy Wilkes - (the latter two shortlisted for the Turner Prize for their solo shows at Milton Keynes Gallery). Occasionally the gallery presents contextual historical shows eg Marcel Broodthaers or James Lee Byars.
The Gallery's third Director, Anthony Spira, takes up his appointment as Director in May 2009.
